How to play Irelia
Read the full guide
Prep the wave before you fight: soften caster minions with W, then start trades only when you can Q through the wave, touch the champion, and still have a reset path out, because that second or third dash is what makes Irelia’s lane patterns actually work .
Irelia top is unusually punished by bad wave states, since a bad crash or frozen short lane strips away passive stacks, dash geometry, and often her clean exit more than it does for most top laners .
Her strongest games are the ones where side waves stay alive long enough for her lead to keep mattering, because recent data shows Irelia ahead is brutal in faster games but loses a lot of bite once fights become cleaner 30+ minute peel setups .
If the wave is bad, stop trying to force Irelia mechanics onto a lane that is not offering them. Use W to thin or prep casters, take the CS that keeps the lane recoverable, and wait for the wave to come back toward a spot where a Q chain actually exists. If they are holding a short lane near their tower, do not spend health just to prove you can touch them once. Your goal is to rebuild a wave that gives you a route in and a route out. In practice that usually means being patient for one or two waves, then fighting only when minions are low enough that your first dash does not trap you.
When Irelia strikes enemies with spells she gains stacking bonus Attack Speed. At maximum stacks she also gains bonus damage on hit.
Irelia dashes forward to strike her target, healing herself. If the target is Marked or dies to Bladesurge, its cooldown refreshes.
Irelia charges a strike that deals more damage as she charges. She takes reduced physical damage during the charge.
Irelia sends out two blades which converge on each other. Enemies caught in between are damaged, stunned and Marked.
Irelia fires a massive number of blades that explode outward upon hitting an enemy champion. Enemies hit by the blades are damaged and Marked. Afterwards the blades form a wall that will damage and slow enemies that walk through it.
