How to play Malzahar
Read the full guide
Do not cast W into the wave before the opponent has spent the spell that clears voidlings, because on Malzahar that usually hands over both your shove and your trade window .
Malzahar’s combo is not fixed: against targets who can flash or dash, W-R or E-W-R is often better than a full opener because Q and R both refresh E, so saving Q for after suppression extends the kill and catches the exit .
His best map pressure starts from a wave he pushed first, where disappearing off mid makes river and objective setups awkward, and the recent data supports that this shove-then-threaten pattern matters more to his wins than forcing early action on equal tempo .
Ult the champion who is making the fight hardest for your team to play, not always the highest-value nameplate. If a diver is already entering your carry, suppress that diver. If a fed melee has spent mobility and is now in range, take that window. If the enemy carry is actually exposed and your team can follow, use it there. What you want is a target whose removal immediately cleans up the fight shape. Be careful about forcing on someone with an easy cleanse or no follow-up behind you. In messy games, a reliable ult on the obvious problem is usually better than waiting for the perfect backline catch.
When he hasn't recently taken damage or been crowd controlled, Malzahar gains massive damage reduction and crowd control immunity, lingering for a short period after taking damage.
Malzahar opens up two portals to the Void. After a short delay, they fire projectiles that deal Magic Damage and silence enemy champions.
Malzahar summons Voidlings to attack nearby enemies.
Malzahar infects his target's mind with cruel visions of their demise, dealing damage over time. Using Malzahar's other spells on the target will refresh the visions. If the target dies while afflicted by the visions, they pass on to a nearby enemy unit and Malzahar gains Mana. Malzahar's Voidlings are attracted to affected units.
Malzahar channels the essence of the Void to suppress an enemy champion over a zone of damaging negative energy.
